iPhone SDK and ActiveSync

March 9th, 2008

There have been a number of blogs out there, including this one – which by the way is excellent – talking about the fall of WinMo becuase of the iPhone’s SDK release and the fact that MS have licensed the ActiveSync protocol to Apple.

I really need to say something about this.

What these posts all seem to have missed is that WinMo is mainly targeted at the enterprise customer. Enterprise customers have hundreds of devices to manage…who want’s to manage hundreds of iPhones with no management software? No over the air activation? No policy enforcement? Your top exec running an iPhone, and not being able to fix his issues when your in England and he’s in Dubai?

Have a look at http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/mobile/default.mspx management is what REALLY maters to big Enterprise. Jason Langridge intrduced me to this at the last MMUG meeting.

HomeEasy gets PC Control

March 9th, 2008

Very encouraging to see that this is now possible. If you know me you’ll know that I’m redoing the house at the moment, and that as a Geek I’m building some removable automation into the place. Currently we have two things in place, firstly I’ve used a HomeEasy PIR and lamp plug in to control the light in our downstairs hallway. It’s great, I never forget (or get told of my the missus for forgetting) to turn off the downstairs light.

Second, I have a Varilight IR remote controlled light switch from TLC Direct in use that allows me to Dim the light in the temporary lounge using the Media Center remote control. Again, really great.

Whats cool though is that this post on Automated Home has just informed me that it’s going to be possible to use xPL Monkey which has all the deets and transmitter from these guys to control stuff remotely. I love this, and it’s going to integrate well. I’m adding it to my TechPurchases list!

Offtopic: HATE the B&Q website, it’s so hard to use!!!

Official Google Blog: Google Calendar Sync

March 9th, 2008

Following up on my last post, I’ve had a chance to try Google Calendar Sync now and I have to say that it is useful. It’s missing a really important feature for me though. It doesn’t sync my subscribed calendars. I use Google Finance to manage my portfolio and I subscribe to the events calendars for the stocks I hold. This doesn’t sync those events. A real shame. It also means that all the public holidays aren’t sync’d either. Shame.
