Hello Glen,

I have a Logiech Harmony 880 with a volume button that no longer works. I have researched this on the web and found many others complaining of the same problem. It appears Logitech does not care about the problem other than offering a 50% discount on a new Logitech product ( as in buy it from us, cut out the retailer). Actually, I would prefer that you provided a decent product to begin with so I wouldn't have this problem. Your customer service just sends me the same old “Too bad you don't like it, we are happy to sell you another one direct at 50% off”. This is just to tell you I will never purchase another Logitech product, and every time I see an opportunity like this on the web I will repeat this message. You are right in as far as the whole world SHOULD upgrade.

But in the current climate, a lot of businesses are not in a position to upgrade their core business systems (which as I said could cost huge money). And until these upgrades are made, the business can't move away from IE6.

So it's not a case of will not move. It's a case of cannot move due to the huge costs involved and unless you work in or have first hand experience of life in a corporate IT environment, this may not make sense.

This is a very real problem but the argument coming out of the enterprise is:

> We know IE6 is vulnerable
> We know the thing to do is upgrade
> But if we upgrade, we can't access our payroll application which needs IE6
> So nobody will get paid this month
> And we don't have $1million to go out and buy, build and migrate to a new payroll application this year
> And the board don't understand all this stuff so don't get it.

So by all means lets encourage everybody we know to upgrade their browser. And at the same time we make sure they all understand that an unpatched version of Firefox is just as insecure as anything else but lets not think we can "force" the large enterprise customers to do the same. That's not how the real world works I am afraid.

I think the argument for change has just been made. Security. Ed’s right, if you’re recommending anything but an upgrade from IE 6 as an IT Pro you’re guilty of negligence (in almost the same way as a doctor not prescribing a specific drug because it’s too expensive).

Also every single home user needs to upgrade, sure some will be at the end of a slow connection but it’s worth the time. The analogy here is having a lock on your front door that everyone out there know’s can be opened with a toothpick.

I am sure a lot of the organisations still using IE6 would love to upgrade however people keep forgetting one slight problem.

A lot of big corporations have a lot of big (and old) applications and quite a few of these, especially finance, CRM and HR packages for some reason, only run under IE6.

Yes this is bad. Yes it should not be allowed but considering that it may cost the company over $1million to change that application and retrain all its many thousands of users and considering that the application works fine and does it’s job well, why change it?

So why throw out a perfectly good application which in turn will cost many thousands of dollars and involves months of retraining just so you can change your browser?

The argument for change is just too weak.

Thats great I have been looking for something that will bulk convert the .wtv to .dvr-ms however lifextender keeps crashing when it comes to removing the commercials. Now all I need is a program that incorporates them both that will scan and convert subfolders so it plays nice with metabrowser, since dvr-ms doesn’t support the new thumbnails.

I’ve not read the book, but did find a series of Video Podcasts where Oprah Winfrey had Marcus Buckingham do a ‘self help’ conference for a group of American women. It’s about identifying your strengths and what you enjoy doing, to focus on those things to enjoy your work more and be more fulfilled. It’s on Itunes and well worth downloading to your IPOD. Just search for Marcus Buckingham.

First try to track down the manufacturers web site, often they’ll be drivers on there for it – there might not be Windows 7 drivers available yet though, and it’s possible that if it’s old the manufacturer won’t be creating them. It’s the manufacturers responsibility to write drivers not Microsofts. Even if they don’t have Windows 7 drivers try drivers they have for Vista or even XP (it means moving to a less “secure” driver model – in turn that means more changes of crashes basically) but at least your hardware will work.

go to the motion detection view and click the setting tab – then choose a specific area of your image rather than the whole thing – if you’re monitoring a door you only need to monitor the handle not the whole door to see it open – now adjust your sensitivity & tolerance appropriately by using a smaller area you can look at a higher sensitivity and lower tolerance without catching shadows leaves in the wind etc

I’ve been trying to get the motion detection email to work with googlemail but without success so far. The port and smtp server are set correctly
(465 and smtp.gmail.com) – these settings work with my email client (thunderbird) but not the Y-Cam. Any suggestions or an alternative email service that will work?

Hi, Google Calendar sync works really well with my Outlook, but I would really like it to sync with my Blackberry built int calerdar as well. Google Sync is supposed to be able to do that, but when I submit my mobile numbner it tells me it’s invalid. I would love to know if you have heard of any workarounds?
